General McCHRYSTAL asks for more troops...

In all recorded history from the ROMANS to the ALLIES in WWII[with the possible exception of GIDEON in Biblical battles] to our present foray into AFGHANISTAN --- has any commander ever asked for fewer troops to win battles or a war??? Are more troops no matter the advances in technology always the answer to win conflicts???
